Media Literacy Week is more topical than ever this year

Media Literacy Week 2019: On or off?

In a world full of media we constantly have to make choices. Want to check your apps or are you going to sleep early? Do you leave your child alone on the tablet or do you read a book together? Do you arrange your online banking affairs yourself or do you have someone else do it for you? The Media Literacy Week 2019 therefore has the theme: 'On or off?'

Every year, Media Literacy Week – an initiative of our client Network Media Literacy – draws attention to the importance of media literacy and wants people to think about their own media use.

The Issuemakers provided substantive support for the last edition and were responsible for the media strategy and guidance. Important goal this year: increasing brand awareness of Media Literacy Week among a new target group: people aged 55+. And while maintaining successful projects such as MediaMasters, the serious game that is played by almost 200,000 children from groups 7 and 8.

We started publishing the research report a month before the kick-off Elderly in Digital Netherlands about the elderly and their media use, together with the Digital Society Alliance. Princess Laurentien and then State Secretary Knops (BZK) were present at the research presentation. The research results were well picked up by media such as Omroep Max, Plus Online and talk show Beau.

In November we kicked off the Week with the first Gray and Wise Media Festival at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum. With the first Swipe-Gym session in the Netherlands by Olga Commandeur and performances and workshops by Marijke Helwegen, Rob Mes and Marga van Praag, hundreds of elderly people have become much more media-savvy. The Grijs en Wijs Media Festival was made possible by Stichting Digisterker, Samsung Electronics Benelux, SeniorWeb, Stichting Nationaal Ouderenfonds, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the Library.

During Media Literacy Week, more than 200 events were organized that were intended to teach young and old about the advantages and disadvantages of their media use. Almost twice as much as the year before.
